Union Square Laser Dermatology is proud to be one of the first practices in the United States to premiere the FDA-approved, in-office Sebacia treatment for mild to moderate inflammatory acne. During this treatment, gold microparticles are used in combination with our Gentle YAG laser to specifically target and eliminate overactive oil glands and oil production which lead to acne.
“Patients who prefer not to take antibiotics or who have been on them for several years regularly ask about other alternatives,” says Medical Director Dr. Anne Chapas. “I’m pleased to offer this next generation in acne therapy. Both Sebacia’s clinical trials and our own internal research have shown promising results for a majority of patients.”
First, micro-particles are suspended in a formula and massaged onto clean skin. These micro-particles feature a silica core covered in gold. These materials — when broken down into really small pieces — have the ability to penetrate the skin and reach the oil glands, located deep in the skin. Next, your dermatologist targets the acne lesions with a pointed laser, effectively halting oil production in the gland underneath. Since gold is a light-absorbing material, it draws in the laser’s pulsing light and safely delivers it directly to the oil gland.
The laser lasts about 10 minutes each session, as compared to possible months of dryness and sensitivity with oral or topical prescriptions. A full round of treatment requires weekly sessions for three consecutive weeks, starting after one month of topical prescription therapy. The oil glands are progressively damaged with each treatment causing the acne to improve 2-3 months after the last treatment. The results can be long lasting as the damaged oil glands do not return.
